Doll House

A doll house is a miniature toy home which may be designed to compliment little figures. It may also be prized as a collectible item in its own right. In fact, the first of these miniature homes were kept with this focus in mind.

The doll house as we know it has its origins in European "baby houses." Miniature models of homes were created long before this, however. Many smaller scale homes with accompanying human and animal figurines have been found in the pyramids of ancient Egypt. These are assumed to have had some ritual significance.

An early doll house of the European variety, on the other hand, was a luxurious display for the wealthy. They were custom made and very ornate. Often, children were not allowed anywhere near them. It was quite common for one of these ornate baby homes to be worth the cost of an actual home of modest size.
