Porcelain Dolls
Porcelain dolls were first created during the latter part of the eighteenth century. It was in Cornwall, England that they first arose. At this time, just doll heads were created from the material. These miniature heads generally had hair and eyes molded into them. It wasn't until later that a system of having hair attached was developed.
True porcelain dolls are created from the ceramic material known as porcelain. This is created from raw materials. Mostly commonly, the form of clay known as kaolin is a significant part. These materials are heated to temperatures between 2,192°F and 2,552°F to create the hard ceramic shell.
The term "porcelain dolls" isn't always used with figures created from this material, however. Within the trade, there are specific guidelines dealing with the color, appearance, texture, and hardness used to define the term. In more day to day use, a figure created from different substances which have similar surface qualities may be given the name.
